General Classic White - Expert Review

When it comes to the traditional taste of Swedish Snus, General Snus is the standard-bearer. There isn’t another product line on the market that captures the classic, traditional, premium taste of bergamot and tobacco. Going back to 1866, General has been the benchmark for what Swedish Snus should be, and General White Portion delivers that flavor in a classy, premium package. For many in the US, this is one of the first flavors they tried, myself included, so it stands out amongst others due to its worldwide presence.

One thing I like about this one is how incredibly well balanced it is. Opening the can, you’ll encounter a mild, gentle aroma of earthy tobacco and some tart bergamot. It’s slightly spicy, with a dab of pepper in the background. One thing you’ll notice is that the portions are arranged in a spiral. This is called the “Star Format”, and is reserved for Swedish Match’s premium white portion products. I suggest rolling them around in your fingers, or, “fluffing them”, because it makes them more comfortable under the lip. The portion material is soft, semi-moist, and has a moderate comfort level under the lip. The flavor profile is quite good. While I usually enjoy a snus with a bold flavor, I think the balanced nature of this one makes it one of a kind. The tobacco base comes through in a mild, subdued way with an earthy nature to it. The mild bergamot citrus flavor compliments it quite well. There is a slightly spicy peppery taste to it, which adds a nice dimension to the flavor profile. The nicotine strength is moderate, and has a steady, stable delivery. The flavor lasts up to an hour, sometimes more!

When it comes to the traditional, classic taste of Swedish Snus, General Snus is the true standard-bearer. It sets the bar for what others aspire to be. It is a true classic, a premium snus like no other. If you enjoy the taste of bergamot/citrus, this is one that you’ll want to experience for yourself.

I have a soft spot for this snus. Back in September of 2009, it was the first traditional flavored Swedish Snus I fell in love with. While i moved on to other formats in the General family over the years (loose, XRANGE, G3, etc), this is one that I like to revisit from time to time. There’s just something about the way the flavor balances, and the mild delivery of the taste of this one that makes it really special, for me. It's a must-try.
